I've been playing the game (a lot) for the last few weeks, and while I still miss dunks now and then, I also get a lot of satisfaction when I throw down a cool one. Not only does it introduce some innovative new mechanics to the genre, it never makes things too easy. If you're a fan of high-flying, acrobatic dunks, you owe it to yourself to check out NBA Live 2005. For instance, there is a group of NBA players sitting on the sideline (toting video cameras, of course), and if you manage to impress them, they'll jump around wildly, just as you might see in the real thing. There are some nice little touches in place, too. If you try to repeat a dunk, he'll notice, and the ribbing won't stop until the next man steps up to the line. Equally harsh, though very funny, is TNT's own Kenny Smith. J, Spud Webb, and Dominique "The Human Highlight Film" Wilkins are all on hand to critique you and, at times, they can be a little harsh. As in real-life, you'll be graded by a panel of your peers, and EA has brought back some of the major players to give you your scores. After you dunk, of course, it's time to be judged. You can even choose where you want the ball to hit first, aiming it toward the scoreboard, backboard, or even the boom mike positioned over the hoop. Your man will put the ball on the ground, take a few steps back, then walk towards it and put it in the air with a soccer-style rainbow kick. My favorite toss, however, comes from rotating the stick in a Street Fighter fireball manner. Pulling back will make your player bounce the ball off the ground, into the backboard, and into his waiting hands for the jam. Pushing up will simply throw the ball ahead of you, and you can catch it off the bounce for the dunk. What would a dunk contest be, though, without some crazy alley-oops? Boring, that's what! Using the right analog stick, you can do a variety of tosses. These range from the mild (holding the ball a little bit longer) to the wild (putting the ball through your legs in mid-air). Of course, simply holding down the button and going for a standard dunk isn't for everyone, so you can use the triggers to modify and tweak each and every dunk. For a Pump jam, just hold down the O button, and the square button will do a Clutch dunk. Holding the X button will throwdown with a Tomahawk jam, while the triangle button will allow you to perform a Windmill. Once you're in the air, the face buttons again offer a variety of dunk choices. Let's start with the takeoffs: you can leap from either one or two feet utilizing two of the face buttons, while the other two allow you to start rotating for the 180 degree dunk. EA estimates that there are over 20,000 different variations that you can pull off, and while we obviously didn't get to try all of them, it's easy to see that your options are limited only by your imagination. The most amazing part of the Dunk Contest, however, is the sheer number of amazing combos you can pull off.
